Honda recalling nearly 400,000 cars over ignition switch

Honda announced Monday that it is recalling 384,220 cars due to a glitch with a component of the ignition switch that can ultimately lead to a vehicle rolling away and increasing the risk of a crash.

The cars being recalled are 2003 Accords, 2003 Civics and 2003-2004 Elements, all with automatic transmission.

Driver in serious condition after crash with light pole at busy Riverside intersection

A single-vehicle collision on Arlington Avenue in Riverside tied up traffic at one of the city's busiest intersections during Tuesday evening's commute.

At 5:11 p.m., Riverside police got a call of a pickup that lost control as it traveled east on Arlington east of Sunset Ranch Drive, sheared off a light pole and came to a stop atop the sidewalk, said Riverside police Lt. Vic Williams.

The driver was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition, Williams said.

23 arrested in Hemet crime probe

A Riverside County task force arrested 23 people Tuesday after serving search warrants at dozens of locations as part of an investigation into attacks by a suspected white supremacist group against Hemet police, according to law enforcement authorities.

The operation by a local, state and federal task force took the suspects into custody on suspicion of narcotics, weapons and parole violations, the Hemet Police Department said.

The arrests follow what police said were a series of calculated attacks against officers and city property in the Inland Empire city, a place once favored as a slow-paced retirement community before its crime rate started to inch up.

Woman skydives for 90th birthday

JOSHUA TREE — It took perseverance, but Bonnie Robbins collected on her 90th birthday present to herself Saturday, participating in a tandem parachute jump in Perris. “I had been talking with my granddaughter; she wanted to skydive,” Robbins said, explaining the genesis of the birthday adventure.

Robbins’ birthday was Feb. 25, “The Big One” by her account, but “it was just raining buckets” the day she left her home for Skydive Perris and conditions were no better at the airfield.

Three more trips to the jump school resulted in zero successful skydives because of high winds. On the last unsuccessful trip, Robbins said winds were fine on the ground, but instructors determined in the afternoon the winds were not within safe ranges at the jump altitude.

Victorville mother loses consciousness behind the wheel; two injured

A Victorville mother apparently passed out while driving a sport-utility vehicle this morning and crashed head-on into oncoming traffic, authorities said.

The 34-year-old motorist, who has not been identified, was flown to Loma Linda University Medical Center and is being treated for several broken bones. Her children - a 4-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy - were properly seat belted in the Chevy Suburban and were not injured.

Witnesses say the woman was driving recklessly on Seventh Street and La Paz just before 10 a.m., moments before she crossed into oncoming traffic near Desert Knoll Drive and hit a GMC Yukon.

The 41-year-old man who was behind the wheel of the GMC remains hospitalized at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton.

VICTORVILLE • A motorist who fell asleep at the wheel crashed into a utility pole Monday morning, knocking out power to hundreds of customers, officials said.

The crash happened just before 8 a.m. near Mojave Drive and Amargosa Road, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials.

Power was cut to hundreds of homes and businesses from Mojave Drive to Hook Boulevard and from El Evado Road to Interstate 15, sheriff’s officials said.

Southern California Edison workers restored power to most homes within about an hour.

Investigators learned Vizcarra was driving south on Amargosa Road in a friend’s car on his way to the Victorville Courthouse to meet another friend when he fell asleep.

San Jacinto police have arrested a man accused of posing as a police officer and trying to carjack a woman earlier this month.

Officers tracked Jeremy Nievas Phillips, 32, of Nuevo, to a motel in the 2600 block of Florida Avenue in Hemet, Sgt. Stephen Mike said. Phillips was wanted on several warrants, including vehicle theft, carjacking and robbery.

Phillips matched the description of a man who on March 1 walked up to a woman in her car near Seventh and Hewitt Streets. The man was not in uniform or with a badge, but said that he needed to commandeer her car and that other officers were on the way, Mike said.

Four people were injured this afternoon, one seriously, when a sport utility vehicle plunged off a freeway overpass onto a small coupe.

The collision was reported at 3:47 p.m., said Tom Rubio, a spokesman for the San Bernardino Fire Department. When fire crews arrived they found that a late-model Dodge SUV traveling south on Highway 330 drove off an overpass onto a late-model Honda coupe on eastbound Highway 210.

Heavier rain to follow latest spritzing in O.C.

The first of two Pacific low pressure systems moved through Orange County yesterday and early today, barely spritzing the landscape, and not even doing that in many areas. The National Weather Service had said the county would be lucky to get one-tenth of an inch of rain. But forecasters also say the second system will be far stronger when it gets here late Friday night.

“Preliminary rainfall totals should be about half to one inch in the coastal and valley areas, near two inches on the coastal mountain slopes and less than half an inch in the deserts,” says a weather service advisory. “Runoff will develop quickly and there could be local flooding of poorly drained low lying areas and small streams. Man dies after crashing stolen car into tree

IRVINE – A Garden Grove man died early today after slamming a speeding stolen car into a cluster of trees as he was trying to evade police, officials said.

The crash at the intersection of Alton Parkway and East Yale Loop occurred at 1:31 a.m.

At 1:30 a.m., an Irvine police officer saw a four-door Nissan Altima approaching the intersection of Alton Parkway and Harvard Avenue. The vehicle was traveling more than 80 miles per hour and didn't stop for the red traffic light at the intersection, Lt. Henry Boggs said.

The officer tried to stop the car but lit sped eastbound on Alton Parkway through Culver Drive.

About 30 seconds later, another officer sitting at the intersection of Alton Parkway and East Yale Loop saw the car speed by, Boggs said. The vehicle went out of control, struck the curb and smashed into trees on the intersection's southeast corner, he said.

Motorcyclist killed in crash with car

HUNTINGTON BEACH – A man was killed early Sunday when a car struck a 1986 Harley Davidson motorcycle he was riding, authorities said.

Richard Ciancone, 58, of Huntington Beach, was fatally injured in the 1:52 a.m. crash at Heil Avenue and Bradbury Lane, according to the Orange County Coroner's Web site.

SANTA ANA – A multivehicle crash blocked lanes on the southbound I-5 freeway north of the 55 this morning, backing up traffic onto surface streets as an on-ramp at Fourth Street filled up.

The car-pool lane and the 1, 2 and 3 lanes were blocked, according to California Highway Patrol officer Denise Quesada.

Vehicle crashes into pole, 2 injured

ORANGE – A vehicle crashed into a traffic pole early this morning, injuring the driver and a passenger, according to Orange police.

The crash was reported at 1:58 a.m. at Main Street and Katella Avenue, said Orange police Sgt. Eric Rosauer.

According to Rosauer, the vehicle was traveling westbound on Katella. Once they approached the intersection of Main Street, the vehicle struck the traffic signal pole on the northwest corner, Rosauer said.

Firefighters had to extricate the driver and passenger from the vehicle. They both suffered injuries and were taken to UCI Medical Center.

It is currently unknown if the vehicle was speeding or if any alcohol was involved, Rosauer said.

BUENA PARK -- Firefighters have used the Jaws of Life to rescue a person trapped inside a vehicle after a three-vehicle crash on Western and Crescent avenues, according to fire authorities.
