Woman skydives for 90th birthday

Bonnie Robbins of Joshua Tree treated herself to a tandem skydive for her 90th birthday in February.

JOSHUA TREE — It took perseverance, but Bonnie Robbins collected on her 90th birthday present to herself Saturday, participating in a tandem parachute jump in Perris. “I had been talking with my granddaughter; she wanted to skydive,” Robbins said, explaining the genesis of the birthday adventure.

Robbins’ birthday was Feb. 25, “The Big One” by her account, but “it was just raining buckets” the day she left her home for Skydive Perris and conditions were no better at the airfield.

Three more trips to the jump school resulted in zero successful skydives because of high winds. On the last unsuccessful trip, Robbins said winds were fine on the ground, but instructors determined in the afternoon the winds were not within safe ranges at the jump altitude.
